Nissan X-Trail Skid Plate Guide by Generation: T30, T31, T32 and T33

Nissan X-Trail underbody protection varies considerably between the T30, T31, T32 and T33 generations. The available skid plates cover different model years and protection zones, including the engine, gearbox, radiator, front bumper area and rear differential.

This guide compares the vehicle-specific options currently listed in our Nissan X-Trail underbody protection category. Available products include 2 mm and 2.5 mm steel plates as well as selected 3 mm aluminium plates.

The model year alone is not enough to confirm fitment. Before ordering, check the generation, VIN, engine, drivetrain, market specification, existing underbody panels and mounting layout.

Why fit underbody protection to a Nissan X-Trail?

The Nissan X-Trail is used in a wide range of conditions, from everyday city and motorway driving to rural roads, winter routes, gravel tracks and light off-road use. Potholes, raised surfaces, compacted snow, loose stones and road debris can reach exposed components underneath the vehicle.

A correctly fitted metal skid plate creates a barrier between the road and the specified protection zone. Depending on the selected product, this can include:

  • Engine and oil-sump area
  • Gearbox area
  • Radiator and lower front area
  • Front bumper area
  • Rear differential

The listed coverage describes the zone protected by each individual product. It should not be interpreted as complete protection for the entire underside of the vehicle.

The T30 is the earliest generation included in the current category. On an older vehicle, the condition of the mounting points should be inspected before installation. Corrosion, previous repairs, replacement subframes or missing original panels can affect installation even when the model and year appear correct.

Nissan X-Trail T31 skid plates: 2007–2013

Two 2 mm steel configurations are listed for the T31:

  • Engine and gearbox protection, weighing 9 kg
  • Engine, front bumper area, gearbox and radiator protection, weighing 12 kg

The broader version extends the listed protection zone towards the lower front section and radiator area. The smaller version may suit drivers who only require the engine and gearbox zone.

Nissan X-Trail T31 2007–2013 extended 2 mm steel protection for the engine, front bumper area, gearbox and radiator.

The two T31 products should not be treated as automatically interchangeable alternatives. Compare their mounting layout and specified coverage with the individual vehicle before ordering.

Nissan X-Trail T32 skid plates: 2014–2022

The T32 range includes both steel and aluminium protection:

  • A 2 mm steel plate listed for 2014–2022, covering the engine, front bumper area, gearbox and radiator
  • A 3 mm aluminium plate listed for 2014–2021, covering the engine, gearbox and radiator

The steel version weighs 12 kg. The current aluminium product card does not list a product weight, so no unverified weight comparison should be made.

The different end years are important. The aluminium product is listed through 2021, while the steel product is listed through 2022. This is catalogue fitment information and does not replace a check of the individual vehicle.

Nissan X-Trail T33 skid plates: 2021–2026

The T33 range offers three different protection options:

  • 2 mm steel protection for the engine, gearbox and radiator
  • 3 mm aluminium engine protection
  • 3 mm aluminium differential protection

A separate 2 mm steel rear differential plate is also listed for Nissan X-Trail models from 2021 to 2026. Differential protection is relevant only when the stated plate corresponds with the drivetrain and rear underbody layout of the vehicle.

Nissan X-Trail T33 2021–2026 steel skid plate for the engine, gearbox and radiator
Nissan X-Trail T33 2021–2026 engine, gearbox and radiator skid plate in 2 mm steel.

The steel front plate weighs 12 kg. Product weights are not currently listed on the two T33 aluminium product cards, so they are not included as confirmed specifications in this guide.

Steel or aluminium for the Nissan X-Trail?

The correct material depends on the available product for the vehicle generation, the required protection zone and the driver’s priorities.

Steel plates are commonly selected for frequent use on damaged roads, gravel tracks and routes where repeated underbody contact is possible. However, performance depends on more than material thickness. Plate geometry, formed sections, mounting points, steel grade and impact direction all affect real-world behaviour.

Aluminium plates offer lower material density and do not develop red iron rust like carbon steel. Aluminium can still oxidise or experience surface and galvanic corrosion, particularly around fasteners and contact points in salted-road conditions.

A 3 mm aluminium plate should not be assumed to outperform or underperform a 2 mm steel plate based only on thickness. Compare the complete product design, coverage and vehicle application.

Which protection zone should you choose?

Engine, gearbox and radiator protection

This is the principal front underbody configuration in the T30 and T33 ranges and is also available for the T32. It is intended for drivers who want combined protection across the listed front lower zones.

Engine and gearbox protection

The smaller T31 version covers the engine and gearbox areas without the additional front bumper and radiator coverage stated for the extended T31 product.

Front bumper area and radiator protection

Selected T31 and T32 steel plates include the front bumper area and radiator in their listed coverage. These versions may be useful where the lower front section is regularly exposed to high curbs, frozen snow, ruts or loose debris.

Rear differential protection

A differential guard protects a separate rear underbody zone and does not replace the front engine or gearbox plate. Confirm that the vehicle has the corresponding drivetrain and that the product’s mounting layout matches the rear differential configuration.

Fitment and VIN verification

Nissan X-Trail generations can overlap by registration year, and vehicles with the same model name may have different engines, drivetrains, market specifications and underbody layouts.

Before ordering, confirm:

  • Nissan X-Trail generation: T30, T31, T32 or T33
  • VIN or chassis number
  • Production year
  • Engine or powertrain version
  • Front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive configuration
  • Existing underbody panels
  • Mounting-point layout
  • Required protection zone

The catalogue may describe a product as suitable for all engine variants, but this does not remove the need to confirm the drivetrain and vehicle-specific underbody configuration.

If you are unsure, use the GuardPass™ VIN compatibility checker or send us the VIN and a link to the product before ordering.

Installation and service access

The listed products include mounting hardware and an installation guide. Product cards state that the plates use existing mounting points and do not require drilling.

The installer must follow the supplied installation instructions and confirm that:

  • The mounting points correspond with the vehicle
  • The plate does not interfere with moving or hot components
  • Required airflow and drainage remain unobstructed
  • Service and lifting access are maintained where required
  • All fasteners are tightened in the specified sequence

On older T30 and T31 vehicles, inspect the mounting areas for corrosion, deformation or previous repairs before installation. Installation should be completed by an experienced owner with suitable tools and safe lifting equipment or by a professional workshop.

Nissan X-Trail skid plate FAQ

Which Nissan X-Trail generations are covered?

The current category includes products for the T30, T31, T32 and T33 generations. Catalogue applications range from 2001 to 2026, depending on the individual product.

Is one skid plate compatible with every Nissan X-Trail?

No. The available products have different shapes, mounting layouts, model-year ranges and protection zones. Select the plate for the correct generation and confirm the vehicle configuration before ordering.

Why do the T32 and T33 model years overlap?

Product listings may overlap because registration years, production transitions and market availability differ. The generation, VIN and underbody layout are more reliable fitment indicators than the registration year alone.

Does every plate protect the radiator?

No. Radiator protection is included only where it is stated in the individual product coverage. The T31 engine-and-gearbox plate and the T33 aluminium engine plate do not list radiator coverage.

Does the T33 differential plate fit every drivetrain?

It should not be assumed to fit every drivetrain solely because the engine field says “all”. Differential protection must be matched to the actual drivetrain and rear underbody layout.

Is the rear differential plate a replacement for the front skid plate?

No. It protects a separate rear underbody zone. Drivers requiring both front and rear protection need compatible products for each zone.

Do the plates require drilling?

The product listings state that the plates use existing mounting points and do not require drilling. Always follow the supplied instructions and verify the mounting layout before installation.

Is steel better than aluminium?

Neither material is automatically better for every application. Steel and aluminium differ in weight, corrosion behaviour and structural characteristics, while actual performance also depends on plate design, material grade, mounting system and impact direction.

Are mounting parts included?

The product listings state that the required mounting hardware and installation manual are included.

What warranty and return period are provided?

The listed products include a 24-month warranty and a 60-day return period. Return conditions should be checked before installation and use.
