Underbody Protection FAQ

General Questions

Is aluminium better than steel for normal roads, and does greater thickness mean better protection?

No. Aluminium can be a practical choice when lower weight is important and a compatible version is available, while steel is often selected for repeated impacts and more demanding use. Neither material is automatically better for every vehicle or road condition.

A thicker aluminium skid plate is also not automatically stronger than a thinner steel plate. Real-world performance depends on the material grade or alloy, plate geometry, reinforcement, mounting system, protected area and direction of impact. Thickness figures from steel and aluminium should not be compared in isolation.

For a detailed comparison, read our steel vs aluminium skid plate guide.

Are your skid plates universal or vehicle-specific?

Our products are vehicle-specific and designed for precise fitment for particular car models and generations. We do not focus on generic universal plates.

Will underbody protection affect my vehicle warranty?

Most of our vehicle-specific skid plates are designed to use existing mounting points and do not require drilling, welding or cutting. However, installation requirements may vary by vehicle and product, so please check the individual product description and installation instructions before ordering.

Vehicle warranty coverage is determined by the vehicle manufacturer or dealer. If warranty protection is a concern, we recommend confirming the applicable conditions with your dealership before installation.

Selection & Compatibility

How do I choose the right protection for my vehicle?

Use our UnderbodyGuards GuardPass™ to check your vehicle by VIN. GuardPass™ uses the available VIN data to identify your vehicle, asks you to confirm the vehicle configuration when necessary, and displays compatible underbody protection products from our catalog.

You can also browse our catalog by selecting your vehicle brand, model, and year.

What is UnderbodyGuards GuardPass™?

UnderbodyGuards GuardPass™ is our VIN-based vehicle identification and underbody protection selection tool.

Enter your 17-character VIN to begin. GuardPass™ checks the available vehicle information and may ask you to confirm details such as the model, production year, engine, transmission, drivetrain, or powertrain.

After the vehicle is confirmed, GuardPass™ displays an interactive underbody map with the relevant protection zones and compatible products available for your vehicle.

Why should I check my vehicle by VIN?

A VIN check helps identify the exact vehicle configuration more accurately than the model name and production year alone. Vehicles from the same model range may differ by engine, transmission, drivetrain, powertrain, market specification, or production version.

GuardPass™ uses the available VIN information and asks you to confirm important vehicle details before displaying compatible underbody protection products.

What happens after I enter my VIN?

GuardPass™ first checks the vehicle information available for your VIN. If additional confirmation is required, you will be asked to select the correct vehicle details.

After confirmation, GuardPass™ creates your vehicle-specific protection overview. It displays an interactive underbody map, the relevant protection zones, and compatible products from our catalog. Available products can be added directly to your cart.

What if GuardPass™ cannot fully identify my vehicle?

Some VIN data sources provide only partial information, especially for certain markets, older vehicles, uncommon models, or specific vehicle versions. In this case, GuardPass™ may ask you to confirm the missing vehicle details.

If your vehicle cannot be matched to compatible products, you can submit a request through GuardPass™. Please provide the requested vehicle information so that our team can review the case.

Does GuardPass™ guarantee product compatibility?

GuardPass™ helps match the vehicle information available from the VIN and the details confirmed by the user with the compatibility data in our product catalog.

Before ordering, please make sure that the displayed model, production year, engine, transmission, drivetrain, and powertrain are correct. Vehicles with the same model name may have different configurations, mounting points, or underbody components.

Vehicle modifications, imported versions, and non-standard configurations may affect fitment. If any displayed information is incorrect or unclear, contact us before placing the order.

What types of underbody protection are available?

The available protection products depend on the exact vehicle and its configuration. GuardPass™ may display protection for:

  • Engine: Protects the engine sump, oil pan, and lower engine area.
  • Transmission: Protects the gearbox or transmission housing.
  • Radiator and front section: Protects exposed components at the front underside of the vehicle.
  • Transfer case: Protects the transfer case on four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive vehicles.
  • Front or rear differential: Protects the differential housing from impacts and road hazards.
  • Fuel tank: Protects the fuel tank from stones, debris, and impacts.
  • AdBlue tank: Protects the exposed AdBlue tank and related components.
  • Electric motor: Protects the front or rear electric drive unit on hybrid and electric vehicles.
  • EV battery: Protects exposed areas of the high-voltage battery housing underneath an electric vehicle.

Not every protection zone or product is available for every vehicle.

Can vehicle modifications affect compatibility?

Yes. Most underbody protection products are designed for vehicles with factory suspension, factory bumpers, and standard underbody components.

Lifted suspension, aftermarket bumpers, modified exhaust systems, non-standard subframes, additional equipment, or previous vehicle modifications may affect installation and compatibility.

If your vehicle has been modified, contact us before ordering and provide clear photos of the vehicle’s underside together with details of the modifications.

Construction & Materials

What materials are used in your underbody protection?

Our underbody protection products are mainly made from steel or aluminium, depending on the vehicle application and protected area.

Steel is commonly selected where repeated impacts and demanding road conditions are a priority. Aluminium is usually lighter and does not develop conventional red iron rust, making it a practical option where lower weight is important.

Neither material is automatically better in every application. Real-world protection depends on material grade or alloy, plate thickness, geometry, reinforcement, mounting system, protected area and impact direction.

Thickness figures from steel and aluminium should not be compared in isolation. For more detail, read our steel vs aluminium skid plate guide.

How is the protection treated against corrosion?

Steel skid plates are typically protected with a powder-coated finish designed to reduce corrosion exposure. The coating should be inspected after strong impacts, winter driving or prolonged exposure to road salt, and damaged areas should be repaired where necessary.

Aluminium does not develop conventional red iron rust, but it can still oxidise or experience surface or galvanic corrosion depending on moisture, salt, fasteners and contact with other metals.

Both materials benefit from periodic cleaning and inspection, especially after winter, mud or salted-road use.

Will underbody protection reduce my vehicle's ground clearance?

A vehicle-specific skid plate may slightly reduce local ground clearance because it adds material beneath the protected component, but it should not hang lower than necessary.

A correctly designed plate follows the vehicle's underbody layout, protects the lowest vulnerable area and avoids creating a new unnecessarily low point.

Exact clearance depends on the vehicle, protected zone and skid plate design, so the individual product and installation layout should be checked before fitting.

Are there service access points for maintenance (oil changes, etc.)?

Service access depends on the exact skid plate and vehicle application. Some plates include an oil-sump or oil-drain opening, while others require the skid plate to be removed during routine maintenance.

Both solutions can be normal. What matters is that service access is practical and that the plate can be removed and correctly reinstalled without difficult or improvised modifications.

Always check the individual product specification and installation instructions before fitting. For more detail, read our guide to skid plate cooling, noise and service access.

Installation

Can I install the protection myself?

Yes. Each product includes comprehensive installation instructions specific to your vehicle model and a complete hardware kit. With basic tools and mechanical aptitude, installation is manageable for most vehicle owners or any qualified service center.

Are fasteners included with the skid plate?

Yes. The required fasteners and mounting hardware are included in the kit for installation on your vehicle.

Do I need welding, drilling, or vehicle modifications?

Our vehicle-specific skid plates are designed for the mounting arrangement specified for the listed vehicle application. Many products use existing vehicle mounting points and require no drilling, welding or cutting.

Installation requirements can vary between products, so always check the individual product description and supplied installation instructions before fitting. Do not drill, cut or modify the vehicle unless the manufacturer's instructions specifically require and permit it.

How long does installation take?

Installation time depends on the vehicle, protection zone, number of plates, mounting design and available workshop equipment.

A single plate may be relatively straightforward to install, while multi-plate protection sets or vehicles with additional factory panels can take longer. Follow the supplied installation instructions and allow enough time to check alignment, clearances and fastener installation correctly.

Can my regular mechanic install this?

Absolutely. You can purchase from us and have any mechanic, service center, or qualified technician install the protection. All necessary components and instructions are included in the package.

Warranty & Maintenance

What warranty coverage is included?

All products include a 24-month manufacturer's warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship. The warranty does not cover damage from accidents, improper installation, modification, or misuse.

What is not covered by warranty?

Warranty does not apply to damage from serious accidents, extreme off-road use, motorsport activities, or failure to follow installation and operation instructions. Normal wear of protective coatings and cosmetic damage without functional impact is not considered a warranty claim.

Do I need to maintain or clean the protection?

Yes. Periodic inspection and cleaning are recommended, especially after winter driving, mud, gravel roads or exposure to road salt.

Remove accumulated dirt, mud and salt from the skid plate and mounting areas. Check fasteners, brackets, drainage openings and the protective coating after significant impacts or during routine service.

For steel plates, damaged coating should be repaired where necessary to reduce corrosion risk. Aluminium should also be cleaned and inspected because it can still oxidise or experience surface or galvanic corrosion.

Will underbody protection affect fuel consumption or noise levels?

A correctly fitted vehicle-specific skid plate should not normally create abnormal noise, vibration or cooling problems. Rattling or vibration can indicate loose hardware, incorrect alignment or contact with nearby components.

The practical effect on fuel consumption depends on the vehicle, plate weight, plate design and number of protection sections installed, so a universal fuel-consumption figure cannot be guaranteed.

For more detail, see our skid plate cooling, noise and vehicle service guide.
