How to Find the Right Skid Plate by VIN with GuardPass™

Choosing the correct skid plate is not always as simple as selecting a vehicle make and model.

Two vehicles with the same model name may have different engines, transmissions, drivetrains, production years or underbody layouts. A skid plate designed for one version may not fit another, even when the vehicles appear nearly identical.

To make the selection process easier, UnderbodyGuards has introduced GuardPass™ — a VIN-based vehicle identification and underbody protection finder.

GuardPass helps you identify your vehicle, explore its available protection zones and find matching steel or aluminium skid plates from the UnderbodyGuards catalogue.

GuardPass VIN check for compatible skid plates

Why Skid Plate Compatibility Matters

A skid plate must match the mounting points and underbody layout of the vehicle.

Compatibility may depend on:

  • vehicle make and model;
  • production year;
  • engine version;
  • transmission type;
  • two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive;
  • body configuration;
  • fuel, AdBlue or battery layout;
  • the underbody component being protected.

Ordering the wrong product may lead to installation problems, additional shipping costs and unnecessary returns.

GuardPass is designed to reduce this uncertainty before the order is placed.

What Is GuardPass™?

GuardPass is an interactive compatibility tool developed for the UnderbodyGuards store.

You enter the vehicle’s 17-character VIN, and GuardPass uses the available vehicle data to identify the vehicle and connect it with relevant underbody protection products.

After the vehicle is confirmed, GuardPass displays an interactive protection map. You can select a zone of the vehicle and immediately view the skid plates associated with that area.

This creates a much clearer selection process than browsing through a large catalogue without knowing which product group to open.

How GuardPass Works

1. Enter the VIN

Enter the full 17-character Vehicle Identification Number.

A VIN normally consists of letters and numbers. The characters I, O and Q are not used in standard VINs because they can be confused with the numbers 1 and 0.

GuardPass also removes common separators such as spaces and hyphens when a VIN is pasted into the field.

2. Let GuardPass Identify the Vehicle

GuardPass checks the available VIN information and displays the detected vehicle details.

Depending on the information available for a particular VIN, this may include:

  • manufacturer;
  • model;
  • production year;
  • engine information;
  • vehicle type;
  • drivetrain or other available specifications.

Vehicle details identified by GuardPass from VIN

GuardPass displays the vehicle information detected from the VIN before showing matching products.

3. Confirm the Vehicle

Before showing compatible products, GuardPass asks you to confirm that the detected vehicle is correct.

This additional step helps avoid continuing with the wrong vehicle data.

4. Explore the Protection Map

After confirmation, GuardPass displays a visual underbody map divided into protection zones.

GuardPass interactive vehicle underbody protection map

The interactive GuardPass map shows the available underbody protection zones for the identified vehicle.

Available zones may include:

  • front bumper;
  • radiator;
  • engine;
  • gearbox;
  • transfer case;
  • fuel tank;
  • AdBlue tank;
  • battery;
  • rear differential;
  • other underbody components.

The exact zones depend on the vehicle and the products available in the catalogue.

5. Select a Protection Zone

Choose the area of the vehicle that you want to protect.

GuardPass then displays all products that include protection for the selected zone, so you do not have to search manually through unrelated skid plates.

6. Review Matching Products

Available products may include steel or aluminium protection in different thicknesses.

Depending on the vehicle, you may find protection for a single component or combined protection covering several areas, such as:

  • engine and gearbox;
  • engine, radiator and front bumper;
  • gearbox and transfer case;
  • fuel tank and AdBlue tank.

You can review the product details and add the required protection directly to your cart.

Compatible skid plates found by GuardPass

Compatible steel and aluminium skid plates are displayed for the selected protection zone.

What Happens If the VIN Cannot Be Fully Decoded?

Not every VIN provides the same amount of technical information through automatic decoding services.

Some manufacturers or vehicle markets may return only partial data. Older vehicles, uncommon versions and commercial vehicles may also require additional confirmation.

When GuardPass cannot create a sufficiently confident automatic match, it offers a manual compatibility check.

You can send the VIN to the UnderbodyGuards team through WhatsApp or email. Our team can then compare the available vehicle information with the product catalogue and help identify the appropriate protection.

This means you are not left without assistance when automatic decoding is incomplete.

GuardPass or the Manual Vehicle Filter?

UnderbodyGuards provides two different ways to find skid plates.

GuardPass VIN Check

GuardPass is suitable when:

  • you want the vehicle to be identified automatically;
  • you are not sure which vehicle version you have;
  • you want to explore protection through a visual underbody map;
  • you prefer to begin with the VIN.

Manual Vehicle Filter

The manual shop filter is suitable when:

  • you already know the exact make and model;
  • you know the production year;
  • you know the engine or transmission version;
  • you want to browse all available protection categories manually.

Both methods lead to the same specialised UnderbodyGuards product catalogue.

GuardPass does not replace the manual filter. It gives customers another, often easier way to begin the search.

Why Use a VIN Before Ordering?

Checking the vehicle by VIN can help:

  • reduce the risk of selecting the wrong product;
  • identify the correct vehicle generation;
  • narrow down relevant protection zones;
  • find suitable steel or aluminium skid plates faster;
  • reduce unnecessary returns;
  • make the ordering process easier;
  • provide the support team with accurate vehicle information.

A VIN check is particularly useful when several vehicle versions were produced during the same model year.

Steel or Aluminium Skid Plates?

After finding compatible products, you may need to choose between steel and aluminium.

Steel Skid Plates

Steel protection is commonly chosen for:

  • demanding off-road use;
  • rocky terrain;
  • forestry and agricultural work;
  • commercial vehicles;
  • situations where high impact resistance is a priority.

Aluminium Skid Plates

Aluminium protection is commonly chosen for:

  • lower weight;
  • corrosion resistance;
  • everyday road use;
  • winter driving;
  • vehicles where reducing additional weight is important.

The best option depends on the vehicle, expected use and the area being protected.

Compatibility Should Still Be Reviewed Carefully

GuardPass is a compatibility assistance tool. It uses available VIN information and catalogue data to help narrow down suitable products.

Vehicle modifications, previous repairs, non-standard equipment or market-specific configurations may affect fitment.

For that reason, product descriptions and vehicle specifications should always be reviewed before ordering. When anything is unclear, send us the VIN for manual confirmation.

Start Your GuardPass Check

Finding the right underbody protection should not require guessing.

Enter your VIN, confirm your vehicle, explore the available protection zones and review matching skid plates for your vehicle.

Prefer Manual Selection?

You can also choose the vehicle make, model, year and protection type through the UnderbodyGuards shop filter.
