Ford Transit Custom Underbody Protection: What to Protect First

The Ford Transit Custom underbody protection range covers listed applications from 2013 to 2026. Selection must be based on the exact vehicle configuration rather than the model name or year alone.

What should you protect first?

The front underbody zone is normally the first priority because an impact here can affect the engine, gearbox or cooling-related components. A separate AdBlue-tank guard protects a different zone and complements rather than replaces the front plate.

The practical order is therefore:

  1. Identify the generation, production year, engine, drivetrain and underbody layout.
  2. Match the front plate to the required engine, gearbox and cooling-system coverage.
  3. Add an AdBlue-tank guard only when that system and mounting layout are present.

None of these products is a complete full-length shield for the entire underside.

Ford Transit Custom 2013–2020 protection

Engine and gearbox protection — 2 mm steel

The Ford Transit Custom 2013–2020 engine and gearbox skid plate is made from 2 mm steel and weighs 14 kg. The current listing specifies 2.0 and 2.2 TD engines, so the year range alone cannot establish compatibility.

2 mm steel protection listed for the engine and gearbox zone on compatible Ford Transit Custom 2013–2020 applications.

AdBlue-tank protection — 2 mm steel

The separate Ford Transit Custom 2013–2020 AdBlue-tank skid plate is a 7 kg steel guard for vehicles with the corresponding tank and mounting layout.

Ford Transit Custom 2020–2023 protection

Engine, front bumper, gearbox and radiator protection — 2 mm steel

The 2 mm steel front skid plate for Ford Transit Custom 2020–2023 weighs 15 kg. Its specified zone includes the engine, gearbox, radiator and lower area behind the front bumper; it does not enclose the complete bumper or cooling system.

Engine, front bumper, gearbox and radiator protection — 3 mm aluminium

The 3 mm aluminium Ford Transit Custom 2020–2023 skid plate covers the same listed zones and weighs 8 kg, compared with 15 kg for the steel version. This weight difference is documented; relative impact performance is not, because it also depends on alloy or steel grade, formed geometry and mounting design.

3 mm aluminium protection listed for the engine, front-bumper, gearbox and radiator zone on compatible 2020–2023 vehicles.

AdBlue-tank protection — 2 mm steel

The Ford Transit Custom 2020–2023 AdBlue-tank guard is a separate 8 kg, 2 mm steel plate and is not interchangeable with the front plate.

Ford Transit Custom 2023–2026 protection

Engine, gearbox and radiator protection — 2 mm steel, SKU 5941986203113

The Ford Transit Custom 2023–2026 steel skid plate, SKU 5941986203113, weighs 14 kg and covers the catalogue-listed engine, gearbox and radiator zone.

Engine, gearbox and radiator protection — 2 mm steel, SKU 5941986203120

A second 2 mm steel Ford Transit Custom skid plate, SKU 5941986203120, has the same listed zones and weight. The product titles do not document the technical difference, so it would be incorrect to assign either SKU to a configuration without fitment confirmation.

Engine, gearbox and radiator protection — 3 mm aluminium

The 3 mm aluminium skid plate for Ford Transit Custom 2023–2026 weighs 10 kg and covers the engine, gearbox and radiator zone. Aluminium does not develop conventional red iron rust, but it can oxidise and requires correct isolation and maintenance at fasteners and contact points.

AdBlue-tank protection — 2 mm steel

The Ford Transit Custom 2023–2026 AdBlue-tank skid plate is a separate 10 kg guard made from 2 mm steel. It complements compatible front protection.

Which underbody zones are covered?

Engine and gearbox zone

The front plate places a metal barrier below the specified engine and gearbox zone. It reduces direct exposure but does not increase ground clearance or eliminate impact risk.

Radiator and front-bumper area

Selected 2020–2023 plates include the lower front-bumper and radiator zone; 2023–2026 front plates list engine, gearbox and radiator coverage. Component names describe the catalogue zone, not complete enclosure.

AdBlue-tank zone

These separate guards depend on the emissions-system configuration, tank position and mounting points.

Steel or aluminium?

The comparable front products use 2 mm steel or 3 mm aluminium. Aluminium has the lower listed weight; steel and aluminium also differ in corrosion behaviour. Neither thickness nor material name proves superior protection. Material grade or alloy, formed geometry, mounting points, fasteners, impact direction and load area all influence performance. See our steel vs aluminium skid plate guide.

Fitment and VIN checks

Year overlaps at 2020 and 2023 do not make the adjacent product ranges interchangeable. Body style, engine, gearbox, drivetrain, market specification, emissions equipment, existing undertrays and production revision can change the mounting layout.

Before ordering:

  • record the VIN, production year, engine, transmission and drivetrain;
  • confirm whether the relevant AdBlue system is present;
  • compare existing panels and mounting points with the product instructions;
  • confirm the correct 2023–2026 steel SKU from application-specific data.

Use the GuardPass™ VIN compatibility checker or send the VIN and a link to the product for manual confirmation before purchase.

Installation and service access

The product cards state that mounting hardware and a manual are included and that existing mounting points are used without drilling. The installer must verify the actual mounting layout and keep required airflow, drainage, lifting points and service access unobstructed. Recheck fasteners after installation and during periodic inspections. Our guide explains how a skid plate can affect cooling, noise or vehicle service.

Where this protection is most useful

Typical applications include:

  • delivery vans repeatedly crossing speed bumps and loading-area ramps;
  • trade vehicles entering construction sites or gravel access roads;
  • camper conversions travelling on uneven rural roads;
  • vehicles used through winter slush, compacted snow and hidden potholes;
  • heavily loaded vans with reduced effective clearance over road obstacles.

Protection does not increase ground clearance or convert a road van into an off-road vehicle. Our guide to underbody protection for winter and bad roads covers combined impact and corrosion risks.

Ford Transit Custom underbody protection FAQ

Is one skid plate enough to protect the complete underside?

No. Front plates cover specified engine, gearbox, radiator and, on selected applications, front-bumper zones. Separate guards cover the AdBlue tank. Other components remain outside these areas.

Which Ford Transit Custom skid plate should I choose first?

Begin with compatible front engine and gearbox protection. Add an AdBlue-tank guard only when the system, mounting layout and operating conditions justify it.

Do all 2013–2020 engine variants fit the same front skid plate?

No. The current engine-and-gearbox card lists 2.0 and 2.2 TD applications.

Why are there two steel products for 2023–2026?

They are separate 2 mm steel listings with SKUs 5941986203113 and 5941986203120. Their titles do not document the technical difference; fitment data must determine the correct version.

Is aluminium better than steel for a work van?

Not universally. Aluminium has the lower listed weight and does not develop conventional red iron rust. Actual impact performance depends on the complete design and mounting system.

Does every Ford Transit Custom need an AdBlue-tank guard?

No. The guard must match the emissions system, tank position and mounting layout.

Choosing the correct protection

Start with the VIN and required protection zone, not material or price. Confirm the generation, engine, drivetrain and mounting layout; then decide whether separate AdBlue protection is necessary. Where both materials are available, compare documented weight and coverage only after fitment has been established.
