
A Mitsubishi ASX does not need protection everywhere underneath the vehicle. The useful approach is to identify which components are most exposed to direct road impacts and protect those areas first.

This does not mean every ASX requires three separate plates. On the products currently available for the ASX, several protection zones are combined into one vehicle-specific assembly.
The lower engine area is normally the first place to protect because it can be exposed when the vehicle passes over a pothole edge, embedded stone, frozen road obstacle or raised section of road.
The oil pan is especially important. A strong direct impact can deform or puncture it. If engine oil is lost and the vehicle continues to run, the resulting damage can be substantially more serious than the initial underbody strike.

The gearbox should not be treated as protected simply because the engine area is covered.
An obstacle can clear the front part of the underbody and then strike the transmission housing farther back. This is particularly relevant on uneven roads where the vehicle changes pitch as the front and rear wheels pass over different heights.
For both Mitsubishi ASX applications currently listed in our catalog, gearbox protection is combined with engine protection. That is a useful arrangement because it creates a larger protected drivetrain area instead of shielding only the oil pan.
An underbody impact does not always occur at one fixed point. Vehicle load, suspension movement, road angle and obstacle shape determine where contact takes place.
A wider plate covering both the engine and gearbox can therefore protect against a broader range of impact positions than a small engine-only shield.
This is especially relevant for potholes and raised road surfaces, where the contact point can move rearward as the vehicle passes over the obstacle.
The current Mitsubishi ASX 2023–2026 protection extends beyond the engine and gearbox to include the radiator area.

Radiator protection is therefore not simply an additional plate for the sake of having more coverage. It protects a vulnerable front-underbody zone that is part of the later ASX layout.

For the 2010–2022 ASX application, the current vehicle-specific solution combines engine and gearbox protection in a steel plate with a listed thickness of 2.5 mm.
The plate also has an oil-sump service opening. This is relevant because routine maintenance access is part of a practical skid plate design, not just impact protection.

For 2023–2026 models, the listed vehicle-specific plate protects the engine, gearbox and radiator area. The catalog specification is 2 mm steel.
For this generation, the available vehicle-specific plate combines these protection zones into one integrated front-underbody solution.

Not every Mitsubishi ASX requires additional steel protection simply because a compatible product exists.
If the vehicle is driven almost exclusively on smooth maintained roads, direct contact with the underside is relatively unlikely. The case for additional protection becomes stronger when poor road conditions are a regular part of normal use.
Typical examples include daily travel on damaged asphalt, rural roads, gravel, deep winter snow or routes where road repairs frequently leave raised surfaces and sharp edges.
A pothole can cause underbody contact even when the wheel itself does not strike the centre of the vehicle.
As a wheel drops into a hole, suspension movement can temporarily reduce the distance between the road and the underside. A sharp road edge can then reach the oil pan or gearbox area.
The risk increases with speed and vehicle load.

Gravel roads create both repeated stone strikes and occasional stronger impacts from embedded stones, deep ruts or raised road centres.
An ASX that only uses well-maintained gravel occasionally has a different risk profile from one that travels rough gravel routes every week.
For regular gravel use, engine and gearbox protection becomes more useful because the probability of direct contact increases.

A skid plate needs to protect vulnerable components without creating unnecessary contact points or interfering with normal vehicle operation.
After installation, there should be suitable clearance around the exhaust, drivetrain, suspension and other moving or heat-producing components.
If a newly installed plate rattles or vibrates, the cause should be checked rather than accepted as normal.

The 2010–2022 ASX product is listed at 2.5 mm steel, while the 2023–2026 product is listed at 2 mm steel. This does not mean the older plate is a stronger upgrade that should be fitted to the newer vehicle.
They are different vehicle-specific products with different shapes, mounting layouts and protected areas.
Correct fitment comes before nominal thickness.
